What is ECCHO?

ECCHO is a food and clothing pantry established in 1981 and located in Milton, WV.  It is managed by co-directors who share equally in the responsibilities of the center.  All of their work,  is done on a volunteer basis.  They are assisted by a Board of Directors, made up of two members from each supporting church congregation.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of ECCHO.  There are no paid personnel, including administration, in the organization.  Therefore ECCHO  is able to provide its services free-of-charge.  The overhead that ECCHO does have is covered by some limited federal funding, grants, and contributions by local churches, businesses, civic/professional organizations and a number of caring individuals.

What is ECCHO's Purpose?

Its general purpose is the distribution of food and clothing to qualified recipients.  ECCHO attempts to feed the hungry in eastern Cabell County through its food pantry by soliciting churches and channeling surplus food from the Huntington Area Food Bank.  However ECCHO's purpose includes not only concern for the physical well-being of our neighbors, but also for their spiritual well-being

.

In addition to food and clothing items, some essential non-food items are also stocked, such as soap, diapers, toilet paper, etc.

What do Volunteers Do?

Volunteers help on a rotating schedule, with each volunteer having preset dates to help.  Volunteers include church members, students from the Cabell Midland Special Ed Class, and concerned individuals.  Volunteer work at ECCHO includes sorting, measuring and marking clothes, arranging clothing display, transporting donated food and clothing to ECCHO. handling and storing food supplies, making up food orders for clients, and moving food and clothing to clients' cars.  Pantry volunteers are particularly proud of the complete and balanced food baskets that clients receive from ECCHO.

How Do Clients Apply for Help?

When a new family or individual visits ECCHO for the first time, they are interviewed by the directors and required to fill out an information form regarding their financial status and needs.  Most information is screened through the Information Referral Service of Huntington.  If the client qualifies for help, it is given immediately.  All information is kept on record and is strictly confidential.
